Another story which is related to WW2 which was highly thought provoking, yet accessible for your average year 5/6 reader is Hitler’s Daughter by Jackie French. It is based on some children telling stories to each other whilst waiting for the bus for school. One of the children starts to tell a story about a girl who was the daughter of Hitler. It conjures up moral issues, mainly what on earth are the implications of your dad being someone like Hitler? The daughter is described as having dark hair and having a physical disability as well – not exactly what Hitler was looking for in the ‘perfect German’. A great read – you could have a philosophical discussion after each chapter!
