I have been meaning to read My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons ever since I heard that it won the Waterstones Children’s book of the year award. The main character, Luke, is a scatty young man obsessed with superheros. Luke misses out on being given superpowers by an alien whilst he is in the loo, resulting in his brother acquiring them instead. His brother isn’t really into super heroes and is more interested in homework. Seems unfair right?
Star Lad, a.k.a Luke’s brother Zach, carries out the usual super hero duties and unsurprisingly becomes a bit of a big deal across the world. Things start to get tricky as people try and uncover the true identity of Star Lad. Things get even more tricky when Star Lad gets kidnapped and there is a massive meteorite heading to Earth which would destroy all human life. Tough one. Will Luke, who is a mere mortal with no powers, be able to save his brother? Will his sides kicks Serge and Lara be able to help him out, or will they just get in the way?
This really is a cracking book which I think will be seen as a classic in years to come. With writing and comedy to rival Frankie Cottrell Boyce, I will definitely be looking out for new stuff by David Solomons in the future.
If I was able to choose any superpower, I think that I would go for super strength. I did originally consider the idea of flight, however, I am very afraid of heights and I would probably be too scared… Being invisible would be a good one too…
What super power would you choose and why? Leave a comment at the bottom of this post.
